About our Nursery

At Canon Peter Hall Church of England School we have a 39 place nursery that offers both part time and full time places during term time. Our nursery staff and children work closely alongside our reception team to enable a seamless transition into reception class when your child starts full time school. Our nursery children have access to a large classroom space with age specific resources, a snack area as well as a fully equipped kitchen in which the children enjoy helping the staff prepare snack each day. Our outdoor environment is large with both grass and hard surfaces enabling children to access outdoor learning throughout the year. We also have a forest school area and pond which the nursery children access in small adult-led groups.

All of our Early Years staff are trained paediatric first aiders.

Planning for children with additional needs is in line with the Special Educational Needs & Disability policy.
Planning opportunities that are based on children’s existing knowledge, experience and interests which develops their self-esteem and confidence.
Using a wide range of teaching strategies – small groups, whole class and individualised – based on children’s learning needs.
Providing a wide range of opportunities in a well-planned environment to motivate and support children and to help them to learn effectively.
Monitoring children’s progress and taking action to provide support and challenge as necessary.

Parents as Partners

We recognise the important role parents play in educating the children. We do this by:

Talking to parents about their child before their child starts our school, through home visits, telephone calls or face to face meetings.
Inviting the children and parents to spend time with their teacher in the provision before starting at school.
Encouraging parents to attend consultation meetings to discuss their child’s progress.
Providing parents with a written report on their child’s attainment and progress annually.
Encouraging families to read together and support their child’s development of reading.

Our Environment

At Canon Peter Hall Primary, we recognise that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending the children’s development. The indoor and outdoor learning environment provides open-ended opportunities for child-initiated activities where they can develop a wide range of skills and knowledge linked to the seven areas of learning and development. Being outdoors is essential for a child’s sense of wellbeing as well as supporting all areas of learning and providing the context for developing the characteristics of effective learning. The opportunities offered to children outside are not the same as what is offered inside. Outdoors will often be noisier, more physically active, on a larger scale and messier.

The Nursery and Reception share a dedicated outdoor area which is used all year round in all weathers and so outdoor clothing is needed. Connection to the natural world is important and children are involved in developing an “allotment” as well as retaining some muddy and grassed spaces. The children also access the school woodland area on a regular basis.
